How to Make a Safe Wi-Fi Hotspot on Windows 10/8.1/8/7/XP/Vista

It’s an Internet world. And connecting to the Internet has become the basic demand in our daily life. Everyone has lots of things to do online: shopping, reading, chatting, doing business or just entertaining. A portable Wi-Fi hotspot is one of the important accesses to allow you to be online. You can build a safe Wi-Fi hotspot yourself to share Internet connection. Anyone nearby with a Wi-Fi-enabled device, like an iPhone, iPad, Android phone or even a laptop/notebook, can connect to the Internet for free.

What’s a Wi-Fi Hotspot

A Wi-Fi (or wireless) hotspot is a physical location which offers Internet access over a wireless local area network or WLAN. You can use your iPhone, iPad, Android phone, laptop or any other Wi-Fi-enabled devices to access the hotspot, and then you can connect to the Internet. Typically, you can find Wi-Fi hotspots at public places, like airports, bookstores, coffee shops, department stores, fuel stations, hotels, hospitals, libraries, restaurants, supermarkets, train stations, etc. You can create your own Wi-Fi hotspot on your Windows computer at your home, office, meeting room, or party to share wireless internet connection for free.

How to Make a Safe Wi-Fi Hotspot on Windows Computer

If you have a Windows laptop, desktop PC or notebook computer, either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows 10, Windows 8.1, Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows XP or Windows Vista, use OSToto Hotspot (formerly called 160WiFi). It can instantly turn your computer into a Wi-Fi hotspot for free. 160WiFi is a very nicely designed and built WiFi hotspot creator. It’s free, safe, no ads and no pop-ups.

Editor’s Note: 160WiFi has been updated to the new version called OSToto Hotspot. The name change has happened recently. All users can download and use the new version for free to create a safe WiFi hotspot to share computer Internet connection.

Go to the official website to download and install OSToto Hotspot (former name: 160WiFi) on your computer: http://www.drivethelife.com/free-wifi-hotspot-creator.html

Here is how to use OSToto Hotspot to turn your computer into a sharing Wi-Fi hotspot.

Step 1. Launch OSToto Hotspot on Your Windows Computer

Run OSToto Hotspot after you’ve installed it on your laptop or notebook computer. It will automatically start a Wi-Fi hotspot. For a desktop PC, OSToto Hotspot will reply with “Can’t find the wireless adapter” if there is no wireless adapter on your computer. In this case, you need to install a wireless adapter for your PC and OSToto Hotspot will automatically install a correct wireless card driver for it.

Step 2. Access Free Wi-Fi Hotspot

You will see the name and the password of the Wi-Fi in the Interface of OSToto Hotspot. Now use the password to join the Wi-Fi hotspot with any Wi-Fi-enabled devices.

Note: You can use OSToto Hotspot as a management. You are allowed to blacklist the devices if you don’t want them to access your network, measure your network speed, and timing shutdown. We’ll add more features into this utility in the near future. If you get any idea, tell us. We’ll try to follow what you like.

Updated: There is an interesting function in the old version 160WiFi, and that is, you can  transfer files from the connected devices to computer, view, backup or download computer files in the control of your mobile phone. This feature has been removed from the new version OSToto Hotspot. If you do like it, tell us. We will take it into consideration in the future.

Benefits of Using 160WiFi (or OSToto Hotspot)

  1. It’s free. You can use all features of OSToto Hotspot for free. No hidden cost.
  2. Enjoy Wi-Fi anywhere. You can access Wi-Fi internet connection anywhere like home, office, airport and so on.
  3. It’s secure to protect your account and password with the standard WPA2 technology. It helps to keep freeloaders out.
  4. Save your money since multiple portable devices can connect to the internet connection for free.
  5. It’s easy to use with clear UI and wizard.
  • Hey, I know this a pretty old post and I seriously doubt I’m going to get a response.
    Anywho, I seem to be having an issue with OSToTo Hotspot (160WiFi). It worked flawlessly for about a month or so when I first installed it as 160Wifi. After a while though, I started noticing problems like irregular and sluggish speed; sudden stoppage; sudden and random changes from normal mode (which works perfect), to speed mode (which doesn’t seem to share any data at all for some reason; never did even when it was 160WiFi).
    Now however, I can’t seem to start a stable hotspot, PERIOD. As soon as I turn on the hotspot, it starts immediately in speed mode (which is basically useless); When I try to switch to normal mode I get a notification saying “Succeeded to switch to normal mode, turning on now, please wait…”; Then another notification pops up : “ICS mode switch failed, has been automatically switched to NAT mode”, after which it’s still stuck in speed mode and no working hotspot :(
    [Also worth mentioning is the fact that via my task manager’s performance tab I’m seeing a heavy flow of data being sent BY my virtual adaptor TO my ethernet, which is really wierd (and this is the first time I’ve noticed something of this sort) and I have no clue as to why that is happening, but this leads me to wonder whether my laptop may be having driver or hardware issues]
    If anybody does ever read this, I would be grateful for any advice on the matter.

  • Windows 10

    • OK. Then try the steps below to see if your ICS is working:
      Find Computer on your desktop;
      Right click and choose “Management”;
      Then find Services and applications, choose Services, and locate Internet Connection Sharing.
      Check if it is turned on normally.

  • Hi,
    I am a new user of the OSToToHostspot for this recent week. I have some question and suggestion.
    My question is, I see on your post above when it is still called “160Wifi” it seems it have the “WiFi Hotspot” and “Remote Controller” tab. Is the “Remote Controller” not supported anymore?
    My second question is, on your post above you mention “allowed to limit the speed of the connected devices” but I can’t find it anywhere and also not mentioned in the guide. Again, is it not supported anymore?
    My suggestion (or complain) would be, please don’t write the SSID password in plain as you do by now. I found it on one of the configuration file. You can encrypt or hash it with whatever means but please not in plain.

    Looking forward to your reply.
    Thank you.

    • Hi Sherwin,

      160WiFi is the former name of OSToto Hotspot. And since it is called OSToto Hotspot, we have changed something on it. Say, the Remote Controller is no longer available, and the speed limitation is no longer supported.
      However, we may consider adding this feature in the future on OSToto Hotspot.

      As to your suggestion (or complain), I have sent it to our developers. They will improve it as soon as possible.

      Thank you for your support! Have a nice day!

  • Hi,
    I was using 160wifi for almost 4 months… since past one week suddenly I’m facing the issue. Last week it asked me to update the driver and after that it just don’t work. Today, I have updated the newer version my cell is keep getting connected and disconnected again and again automatically. Not sure what to do with this issue. I’m using windows-7 64 bit OS.
    This is not related to the issue but all other sites are giving report that your site is having malware and not recommended to visit.
    Try this:
    http://160wifi-hotspot.en.softonic.com/

    • Hi Ashish. Thank you for reporting your issue.
      A computer needs a wireless network driver to make the wireless network adapter work properly so that you can connect to the network and create a WiFi hotspot to share Internet connection. When the wireless network driver is not working (like it’s too outdated, corrupted, missing or incompatible), OSToto Hotspot (formerly called 160WiFi) will ask you to update the driver firstly. You can try DriveTheLife, which is a professional drivers download and update utility, to download and install the best-matched wireless driver: http://www.drivethelife.com/free-drivers-download-utility.html. Then you can try OSToto Hotspot again to build a WiFi hotspot to keep your cell connected.
      We guarantee that there is never malware, virus, spyware or something like that in our sites and products. We don’t know why other sites you mentioned are giving such reports about malware (probably it’s related to business competition. All our products are free till now. Some malevolent people may make vicious gossip), but we’ll take legal measures to protect our legitimate rights and interests. All rights reserved.
      And Thank you again to contact us. Hope the answer will help you out. If there is any more questions, contact us again.

  • please leave me a email if the new versions come….

    • Hi Sam, it’s no problem. We will inform every user of the future new version. Thanks for using OSToto Hotspot.

    • Can your phone connected to the WiFi Hotspot?

      • i am fatching the same problem.. yes my phone can connect to the wifi but after connecting it shows that there is no internet acess

        • If the cell phone indicates that it is connected via WiFi but can’t search the internet, it means the network protocol is wrong.
          Just restart OSToto Hotspot. If it still can’t work, restart your PC.
          In addition, if you are using proxy network or turned your firewall on, the WiFi will not be working, either.
          So don’t use proxy and turn off the firewall to use stable WiFi.

  • im using this also for almost 7th month.
    when it become heavy or unstable, or my handphone unread but others phone connect. i simply update the driver on the setting button.
    Mostly the “recommended driver” works for me.
    although sometimes i try the “update driver” also.

  • hi team,
    i m using window 7 in my asser aspire 5920 laptop. i installed ostoto hotspot software in it. while launching its showing error. “wirelesscard not found” however its showing in Network option in device manager.
    plz help

    • 1. If you are using a laptop, please make sure the network card is not disabled.
      Open network and sharing center;
      Click Change adapter settings in the left;
      Locate your network adapter and right click it to see if it is enabled.
      If it is already enabled, try to disable and re-enable it.

      2. If you are using a desktop, please make sure the wireless network card is plugged in. And try other USB ports to plug in if it is already plugged.

      3. Also, check if the wireless driver is working.
      You can check it from Device Manager or using the driver udpater software Driver Talent: http://www.drivethelife.com/free-drivers-download-utility.html

      4. Another cause is the hosted network card is not shown up.
      You need to check if your network card supports the hosted network card.

      * Press Windows logo key and “R” key in the same time to open the Run box;
      * Input cmd and press Enter to open the command box;
      * Input netsh wlan show drivers in the command box and press Enter;
      * Check the result if hosted network is supported.
      If it is supported, check if it is showing among the network adapters from network and sharing center.
      If it is supported but not shown up, you need to update the wireless driver.

      Have any further problems, please feel free to contact.

  • Hi..

    I am a user of ostoto from almost an year and half. But after a new Windows update a week ago, Ostoto starts crashing immediately.

    I just open it and it gets closed automatically. It started happening from the recent Win X around 15 days back. It used to work fine in my Win X befor this update

  • I am entering correct password but on my Samsung S3 it says incorrect password.

  • I have had OSToto for aboutta a month now, and, like a previous comment, one day the app just stopped functioning, after a Windows 10 update I got a few days ago
    I use a Windows 10, version 1607, 64bit

    • What I mean by stopped functioning is that as soon as I open the program, it’ll buffer for a second or two, and then auto-close for no apparent reason, it’s had me at a bit of a loss, honestly

      • I am sorry for this trouble.
        It is a serious bug after the Windows 10 update.
        We will fix it ASAP.
        Thank you for your support.

  • Hey. After a recent Windows 10 update, OS Toto crashes after a few seconds. More precisely, the app crashes after clicking on the Turn on WiFi icon on the app. Even though the app crashes, the hotspot is created. But after connecting, it shows that there is no internet access. Could you help me with this?

  • As of Windows 10, Microsoft has shifted away from Hosted Network, the protocol that was originally introduced in Windows 7 to allow Internet Connection Sharing on PCs. Hosted Network has been replaced with the new Wi-Fi Direct feature, breaking almost all applications and instructions for turning a Windows laptop into a Wi-Fi hotspot. Starting with their Surface Pro line of computers and tablets, Microsoft has eliminated the Hosted Network feature entirely….

    is this true? is this why OS Toto keeps crashing?

  • Hello admin,

    I am facing this following problem.

    After installing the file, whenever I go to start ostoto hotspot it automatically switches to normal mode from speed mode and then stops running. The icon vanishes from the hidden icon on desktop. What can i do?

  • Hello Admin,
    Me and my friend have been using Ostoto hotspot for about half a month. At first, everything seems fine. But all of a sudden, one day, I cant find the wifi network when my friend is hosting the Ostoto hotspot. However, the funny thing is our mobile are able to detect the wifi from the Ostoto hotspot from my friend computer. Please kindly advise.
    Thanks

  • Has the Windows 10 problem been resolved? i seem to be having issues opening the hotspot and keeping it running. it simply just closes

  • Hi, i’m using OSToto almost fine but few days ago Suddenly My Antivirus (Kaspersky) block this application. then i unblock (Allow to run) this Application. But after that my hotspot doesn’t work. Then i Uninstall and Reinstall this Application Several time but it’s won’t work. When i open this Software it Shows me “Succeeded to switch Normal mode, turning on, please wait…” After this Dialog Shows, in a Second the Software was Close (Totally Close). I’m using Windows 10 OS in HP ENVY 4.

  • Has the Windows 10 problem been resolved? i seem to be having issues opening the hotspot and keeping it running. it simply just closes

  • Ostoto asks me to update my wireless adapters… i have installed all the latest drivers…Is it because i upgraded to windows 10?

    • Hi saadk. When there are system changes, it is better to check your drivers on the PC and make sure the driver versions are the best-match one to the OS.

  • I’m using WIndows 10 and my phone is connected to 160 hotspot but no internet. can you give me the solution?

    • If the cell phone indicates that it is connected via WiFi but can’t search the internet, it means the network protocol is wrong. Try the following fixes:
      1. Restart OSToto Hotspot. If it still can’t work, restart your PC.
      2. If you are using proxy network or turned your firewall on, the WiFi will not be working, either. So don’t use proxy and turn off the firewall to use stable WiFi.
      3. In addition, try to “Forget the Network” in the WLAN settings and re-connect the WiFi by entering the password again.

  • os toto is not working in my laptop.
    its windows 10.
    it shows an error and says that please turn off windows security and restart the pc.
    I did this but same error occurs.
    even virtual router plus is also not working.
    please tell me something to fix this problem.
