3. Edit Registry

You can also change the Windows Registry to resolve the error 0x80070057. Take these steps:
Step 1. Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialogue.
Step 2. Type regedit and press Enter.
Step 3. Hold Windows key and press R altogether.
Step 4. Type notepad and click OK.
Step 5. In notepad, copy and paste the following lines:

Step 6. Click File and then Save As.
Step 7. Set file type to All Files and save this file as wufix.reg on your desktop.
Step 8. Run the wufix.reg file, and agree to prompts to fix the error 0x80070057.

4.Reset Windows Update Repository

  • Thanks renaming the Software Distribution folder worked for me.

  • I tried the first method and it did not work.
    As to method 2 I do not have a start button.

    • You can also Press Windows + X to access the Power User Menu. Then choose Windows PowerShell (Admin) on the Power User Menu to open the command prompt.
